A new discovery in 2017, Yooperlites look like fairly unassuming rocks until you shine a UV light on them, and then they glow a bright fiery yellowish-orange. Yooperlites are found in Michigan, predominantly in the Upper Peninsula along Lake Superior. Walking along the shoreline at dark with a UV flashlight and a Yooper Scooper is a great way to “hunt” for these magical rocks. Get a scoop of sand and rocks and sift through them while shining a UV flashlight to see if any of them glow. You will feel like you’ve hit the jackpot when you see that bright glimmer shining back at you.
